Thank you, grimdan, i’d say that’s a well formulated, clear and compact summary of how TF Industries works. Like i said earlier it is my first try using a large map. That’s also because i have just started playing TF again after a ‘sabbatical’ of more than a year (mainly due to the, then, inevitable traffic jams) to see what the upgrade is all about. Personally i wouldn’t have mind if they would’ve called it TF2, i am that happy about it.

I took the plunge and setup a second steelmill/goods line serving 5 cities that did not have any goods supllied yet. Going well sofar !…  ;- )

    Thanks a lot again !

    Thanks for your replies !

    >I don´t know where you heard this, but it´s not correct.<

Well, i’ve heard it right here, many times….

    >You may use as many industries as you like on any map, independent of size and number of cities.<

Really ??…. Could this have been implemented in the latest update i wonder ? ( i did not play TF for more than a year..)  Sounds great but it’s the first time i read someting like this about TF industries… There is of course something realistic about the competition that industries may encounter. On a large map however it seems to become undoable to supply goods to all cities from just 3 plants.

Well, i suppose it won’t hurt to give it a try, i save all my doings anyway.  ;- )

    >I think that the question was not well formulated: is it true that supplying the SAME CITIES by MORE INDUSTRIES disrupts the supply chains ?<

No, the question was formulated Ok. It is about delivering goods from only *one* steel-, sawmill and refinery. I have always read that if you f.i. have one steel mill running at top production and you start running another (of course supplying goods to *other* cities than those supplied by the first steel mill) you will see the top production of your first steel mill deteriorate very rapidly. This is also exactly my own experience but that is more than a year a go….

It just might be something has been done about it with the latest update and i would surely welcome that very much.

    Let’s see…..

    Thanks much again, gentlemen ! :- )

Ok, thanks, gcampono. I just want to be careful not to mess up a good running map for a change.. ;- ) It’s actually the first time i’m trying a medium map (after the upgrade, which i now find surprisingly fantastic ! ). Just about all cities that i do not supply with goods myself have these 25/25 auto goods running either from a steel mill, saw mill or oil ref. They use other mines and wells than the ones i am using myself.

I understand that there’s one simple rule to keep good cargo lines running :  use only *one* ore/coal mine, oil well and forest to provide material to the various factories. These ‘auto cargo’ lines however seem to be not restricted to this rule…. F.i. i see two cities being provided with 25/25  ‘auto goods’  from *two* different saw mills. And i want to ship goods from my steel mill to another city but that city is also already provided with 25/25 ‘auto goods’ from *another* steel mill….

I suppose i could just cut them off, they ain’t making me any profit… Although i also wonder what’ll happen if i ignore them, let that city enjoy those ‘auto goods’ and deliver something else on top of that. Maybe they’ll appreciate it and everyone wants to live in that city.  ;- )

    >Actually, there was a change that made cars take into account traffic. If too many people are driving a road and it gets clogged, now people will decide “that takes too long” and take the train instead.<

Sounds good!  Can’t wait to find out, thanks for the tip ! :- )

Before the upgrade it really put me off to see 5 or 6 buses in a row glogged up behind personal cars that were driving on the bus lane ! Is that still happening when car traffic really gets going ?

    >Although I’ve never had issues with lack of train ridership,<

You mean *before* the upgrade ?…

    >maybe you should increase the frequency of your buses and/or trains so that people aren’t waiting too long. Trains are still faster than cars, especially with speed limits.<

So far it looks like the devs did a great job with the upgrade. I am still only in 1950’s now but i haven’t seen one red figure in my pax trains profits yet ! In fact all figures are still in the green but for one tram line. Still i see my 70km trucks stuck behind a 30 km bus on a 4 lane road…. Not all is fixed yet.. ( a bit ridiculous that a GM Fishbowl bus can only carry 12 pax, a real one carries 33 to 45 or even more..,no wonder all these crowds at the busstops  ;- )

    >I used to live in a small town called Wadebridge, between Bodmin and padstow. There used to be a line running from Bodmin parkway station to padstow, via Wadebridge. But its been closed so long(before I even moved there) that it’s now just a cycle path along the river. It would be nice to re-open the line, but there’s half a town in the way now. Lol a tram line would be good though.<

I see, very sad, must’ve been a nice ride along the river and the sea. Great though the path is still there ( i ‘walked’ along it for a piece, gotta love Googlemaps! ;- ) It’s a drag to have to close down a line in TF, in real life it must be really dramatic..

    >I’m in 1960~  in my current game now, and I just build a high speed line from one end of the map to the other, with only 1 stop in the middle. And my God, most trains take a while to turn a profit, but this one was so full by the end of the first year, I had to upgrade the line to a double track and put a second train on. Lol not impressed though, I brought a 180kph train and cars, but it never gets above 130 :-( maps too short. Lol Looks like long distance is the way forward in TF.<

I am progressing very nicely as well,1946 now. Have to say i am quite surprised how well everything goes compared to TF before the upgrade, certainly re pax trains. I thought i’d have a look at the US installment. Love the locs and trains !

     >And yes, supplying a city with 2 different goods is bad for both industries. Same as supplying an industry from 2 separate sources. Ruins it for me.<

I have 7 cities on my map of which 3 are supplied with goods from the Oil Ref., 2 from the Saw Mill and 2 from the Steel Mill. So i guess that’s it as far as goods go… (plants still advice to ship more goods… )

    >Lol Cornwall LOOKs nice, but is by no means a nice place to live, hence why I left. Lol nice to visit, but if you wanna live there, you need to be loaded! And live with the fact, that all summer, you can’t enjoy any of the things you moved there for, cos its too damn busy! Lol all the beach car parks are full, beaches are packed. Heck, I couldn’t even take the dogs to the woods cos that carpark was full too. Lol Cornwall actually NEEDS its railways back, because the towns and roads just can’t cope with the traffic. In the winter, my drive to work would take 7 minutes. In the summer, it could take up to 30!…. I lived 2 miles away. Lol <

Sounds pretty much like TF…. ;- ) A few branches have actually been reinstated, isn’t it ? F.i. like Falmouth ? Very nice route in TS, btw. Hopefully more of that will happen sooner or later. Where exactly did you live ?

    >Anyhoo, back to TF. Your start looks pretty good so far. Though I did see a train with no cartridges on your tempe-anheim line. Lol<

Correct. Didn’t sink in yet that i need to select wagons and coaches as well during setup of the replacement system. That’s Ok now.

    >Also, you should keep auto replace for horses off until you get trucks. Because your horses will get old just before new trucks come out, then be replaced, only to really need replacing again, because they’re too slow.<

Thanks, yes, i changed the replacement percentage to 25% for all cargo horses. They all got replaced by the first truck almost immidiately. Same for the stagecoaches and first bus. (hoped they’d have pax showing and a driver after the upgrade…alas peanutbutter (that sounds better in dutch : helaas pindakaas… ;- )

    >I’ve still not got past 1956… Not for going bankrupt, but out of bordem. Usually by then I have every city connected by rail. And a few select industries at near Max output.<

I’m taking it easy with railway. Only 4 lines sofar, 2 cargo and 2 pax. Rest by road. All cities connected. Going surprisingly very well, i must’ve learned something ( or it is the upgrade… ;- ) Almost 100mln profit and counting. First personal cars have appeared though…. trouble ahead..

Say, did i read correctly here that it is best to deliver only ONE kind of goods to a city ??…. That f.i. delivering goods from the Steel Mill PLUS goods from the Oil Refinery to the same city actually works counterproductive ?….

    >That no main connection mod allows you to delete all roads… It’s what I use cos the main connection detection is still buggy. You can build 10 bypasses, but still not be aloud to delete the 200 year old dirt track.Lol and in some cases, not be able to upgrade a raod cos of a ‘not enough space’ error, when there is in fact, loads of space. Lol <

I used to demolish intercity roads as well to counter traffic jams but since you still need roads for cargo and busses it didn’t work in the end. Curious to see what’ll happen now when the car lobby enters the scene. Atleast i suppose Volkswagen is out… ;- )

    >What year are you playing at? <

    1883 and all’s well..  ;- )

    TF1883

    >I’m now in 2010, easy difficulty and some trains lose, but some earn a lot.  Overall profit.  No mods and no tricks in the game.<

Well, sure, i’ve made it to 2096, transport tycoon millionaire and all but that’s more than a year ago. I thought it would be interesting to see what the upgrade is all about. I gave up because of the annoying traffic jams and the constant red figures behind most of my railway pax lines. I hate red figures.. ;- )

Usually railway cargo worked quite well.

I figure in real life it will be hard for railway companies to make a profit as well but something that seems not to be replicated in TF is the rush hours. While trains in my area during normal hours can be seen running almost empty, during rush hours they are fully packed with people. And that’s a local service with many stops.

There’s this ‘no main connections 1.0’ now. Not really sure what it means but i’d like to find out.  ;- )

    >But to be honest, this ‘game’ is more of a sim. It’s more in tune with real life than openTTD, except for a few dumb ideas.<

Yup, i called it a ‘transport sim’ in my post above. 😉 I usually don’t play ‘games’. My favs are FSX and TS2015 and i also create content for both these sims. The last ‘games’ i played were the Myst franchise, which i always thought of as the pinnacle of computer games. And to some extend Euro Truck Sim and Anno 2070.

    >I live in the UK, and I used to live in Cornwall, most of the railway there has been shut down in the last 30ish years due to cars being cheaper and faster to get to where you want.<

Sure, in that respect TF can be called realistic but in other parts of the UK railway is still more or less booming, isn’t it. Here in the Netherlands even new railways are build. I mean, it’s not only cars being the faster transport ( and often even  being slower compared to trains because of traffic jams, something which is (was?…) being extraordinairy well simulated in TF as well… 🙁 ), it can also very much be more comfortable and cheaper to travel by train. Some aspect of train versus car competition would’ve been good and realistic to replicate in TF but it’s just waaay too much as it is now.

    >Most of the railway now just does vintage steam train rides.<

Don’t i know it… 😉 Not that i know much about Cornwall ( Very beautiful ! I ‘know’ it mostly from Inspector Wycliffe and the Coast series, must be wonderful to live there  😉 but i have visited the Severn Valley, North Yorkshire Moors, and Settle to Carlisle railways quite a few times. Talking about Train Fever !! 🙂

    >Even though I love trains, I’m not gonna catch a bus to the nearest station (£5 and 30 minutes), to catch train to the city (£15 and 1 hour). When I can do the whole journey by car, and use less than £20 in fuel and parking, and do the whole trip in under an hour.<

Sure, very understandable of course but f.i. very different from my neck of the woods. I live in an industrial area not far from Amsterdam. If your work is in Amsterdam you’d be crazy not to take the train. Traffic jams all over during rush hours and hard to find parking space. Trains go every 15 minutes (during rush hours) and from my station only a 20 minutes ride. I used to work in Amsterdam and always went by train. Loved that, but true, i didn’t have a car then…  😉

    >So the passenger part of train fever makes sense, annoyingly, the cargo however, is still annoying. Lol<

I still think it is hugely overdone, certainly because the sim is called Train Fever… That’s why i bought it… 🙂

Thanks mucho, Cosmic ! So not much change there… Big Bummer…  :-((

In a transport sim called ‘Train Fever’ one would expect that trains would be the most preferable way of travel. Passengers or cargo alike. Nothing more disappointing than to see cars that the user doesn’t even have control over (other than destroy roads…) spoil the party.

Why the devs have assigned so much influence of cars in a transport sim called ‘Train Fever’ is a complete mistery to me. Even a bigger mistery is the fact that they didn’t do anything about that in the upgrade.

What’s the difference between getting bankrupt in Europe or in the USA because you can’t get a profit from running a train service. With a game called ‘Train Fever’ a true contradictio in terminis if you ask me.

But thanks again for your explanation, Cosmic. Sure hoped to hear something else. Atleast it’s clear that there’s not much use for me to start playing Train Fever again. If the devs leave this deplorable state of ‘Train Fever’ for what it is they’d better start calling it ‘Car Fever’…

    cheers,

    jan

    Thanks, Tossi!

How about passenger trains now, after the upgrade ? Still the same ?… I.e. at first it works well but once people get their cars they tend to avoid travelling by train more and more.

I love the new vehicle exchange system (what a relief ! ), thereafter my biggest wish always was to have a passenger train service without going bankrupt eventually. It’s not called Train Fever for nothing, is it…

Thanks for any insight in this !

Btw, is it normal procedure that first about 4 or 5 locomotives get replaced by more modern locs while we’re still plodding along with horse and wagon on the road ?

” One of the latest updates added the ability to select which cargo the cars can carry, open wagons for example can carry coal, or iron ore. You need to select which one you want now, no more auto selection! So if you have a train going from a coal mine, to and iron ore mine, then a steel mill, you need to make half of your train coal, and the other half iron ore. This is done via the buy vehicles menu, when you select the open wagons, or whatever, there a little icon to click on its stats page to select what cargo it will take.Same goes for cargo trucks. “

    Ok, i see, thanks !!

So selecting which goods will be carried is *only* possible during the buy process, right ? *Not* after the vehicle has been bought ?

One thing still not clear to me, why is automatic cargo coal being delivered to the *Iron-Ore* cargo station ?…. Is that new too ?…

Sure, i can have my horse freighters ( no trains yet ) pick up that coal at the Iron-Ore cargo station as well, or probabely let them load half iron-ore/half coal. But is that really the meaning ?….

    Thanks again !

” Regarding trucks getting stuck in inter city traffic, I use bus lanes along the cargo route. This prevents them getting held up when the crazy traffic strikes.Of course, this doesn’t help when slower trucks hold faster ones up, but personally, I don’t mix them and have the same speed trucks on the same routes. “

Yes, i don’t wait with setting up bus lanes along a cargo route neither, works fine. My OP was just after i saw this awful slow Aboag bus puttering along at 25km on a country road with 10 of these nice fast Opel Blitz trucks stuck behind it. A funny sight ! 😉

Only happens during a specific period in time of course where we can already buy fast trucks but the only available bus is still the Aboag. Never have this problem with trucks neither. If a faster truck becomes available i replace them all.

Yessir, that’s absolutely true. Maybe that’s why they called it ‘Train Fever’…. A fever will luckily always stop sooner or later. It’s either a good or bad chosen name, depending on how you look at it. 😉

It’s not that my pax trains are running empty after a while, it’s just that they run from fully occupied in the beginning to only half full after a decade or two and then with a pax number that never exceeds something like 20 anymore. Even half full pax trains are not profitable anymore.

I live near a train  station, local half hour service, 15 minutes during peak hours, connecting about 10 small towns to a big city. Outside of the morning and late afternoon peak hours, where people have to stand because there are no seats left, these trains also run less than half full or with only a few passengers. So i guess that’s normal in TF too. It’s just that i never noticed anything like ‘peak hours’ in TF. The number of passengers at average remains more or less the same. Lots when a pax train service is started, sooner or later just a few…

Do *your* passenger trains  keep on being profitable right up into the twentieth or even twentyfirst century ?….
