” How many in-city bus lines do you have supporting this? “

I was talking about city to city bus lines…  They’ll never fail. TF inhabitants love them to death. They don’t mind waiting for a free seat for days. Like with pax trains, in-city bus lines will always turn out unprofitable, no matter the frequency or number of in-city lines, atleast in my experience…  Same with city tram lines, very nice and profitable in the beginning but bound to fail as years go by.

” Do you have full coverage of the cities being serviced by trains? ”

Not sure what you mean by that ?…..

” how frequent are the buses? ”

If you mean in-city bus lines, i’ve tried various frequencies. Sometimes even less than a minute, sometimes having only one or two buses run the service just to see what happens. I just tried again with a new map but with trams instead. Around 1920, 4 trams nicely devided, almost full loads with every tram for a couple years ( pax train service, lots of goods via train and trucks) . 1940’s only 3 or 4 pax left with every run of every tram… Balance red…

    I’m thinking about a Star Citizen pledge…  😉

” Try 4 cities together with 3 fast trains on them. ”

Sure i’ve tried that but sooner or later it always fails. Maybe i’m doing something wrong but it’s always the passenger trains that will stop being profitable. It’s true though, the biggest amount of citizens in a city i managed to accumulate sofar is about 1300 while most others remain beneath 1000. I suppose that must’ve something to do with it too. I did always play a small map though. Now trying a medium map, see how that goes.

” that is the big reason why you build train lines, the busses and trucks get stuck in traffic, trains wont get stuck that fast and thereby give a more reliable service “

Absolutely, it’s just that inhabitants of our beloved TF world don’t seem to care to take the train that much…. Maybe they all went to the doctor who diagnosed a bad case of train fever and adviced them to take the bus rather than the train…  😉

” Part of the issue here is that trucks use bus lanes, and nothing can over-take so it seems.
Because of this I tend to keep my trucks out of congested areas by routing accordingly and avoiding bus routes. “

A very sensible thing to do. I wonder why i didn’t think of that… It works, thanks !  🙂

” I don’t use city > city bus / tram lines either, regardless of them sometimes being more profitable.”

So do your city > city passenger train lines accumulate a bit of profit ? I’m trying again, 3 cities connected via bus and 3 other cities connected via rail ( city D>E>F and vice versa ). Only one train with 5 carriages, 85 pax total. Quite good in the beginning, 1920’s, balance in the green, but now in the1940’s usage starting to deteriorate, balance in the red. Might try adding another train but like it has always been, it’s the beginning of the end…  Hate having to sell trains and delete lines because they cost millions. This never happens with bus lines….

” Yes, I have the Steam version. You forgot to say Select Settings. Thank you, FX2K, but it still won’t work for some reason.”

Are you sure it doesn’t work ? While in game did you try hitting the F12 key ? Try again and see if at the very right bottom corner of your screen a very small window appears for a second, it says ” Screenshot taken” or something like that. Also check out ….steam/userdata/57292039/760/remote, any folders in there can contain screenshots you’ve made by using the F12 key.   ( my screenshot folder for TF is called 304730 )

I think, together with the traffic jams,  inhabitants of this otherwise enchanting virtual transport world stubbernly refusing to take the train are the most important things for the dev team to correct. In the more than 300 hours i’ve played (and also very much enjoyed) this game these are deffinately the two issues that have made me want to give up on it several times. Sure i’ve got medals for managing full loads of passengers trains but as soon as cars start to appear the passenger’s ‘Train Fever’ starts to detoriate very quickly and all that’s left to avoid bankrupcy is to delete the passenger train lines and sell the trains.

And it’s not like the reason for these passengers not to take the train anymore is because they all have bought a car….Reinstate the ol’ intercity bus lines et voila, there they are again, crowding up at the busstops by the hundreds as if any moment a rock concert will begin right there in the middle of the street. I can’t help sticking my tongue out to these poor sods as i drive by in an almost empty tram. I’m glad for them it doesn’t rain in the TF world (yet..)

Standing there at the busstop, waiting for hours, days, weeks, months, for a bus that’s not filled up to the last seat already or stuck in a traffic jam. Too focused to have noticed the almost empty comfortable train that has just left the station for the last time…  I’m surprised this whole TF world doesn’t colapse all together because people must be getting fired by the hundreds for arriving late each day or not arriving at all.

C’mon TF devs, get rid of these annoying traffic jams and put some real train fever into the inhabitants. As it is now the games’ name should be ‘Bus Fever’, certainly not ‘Train Fever’.

On behalf of all the inhabitants of the TF world, thank you so much !

On the other hand… , after about 3 weeks of playing this wonderful game i’m only just getting the hang of it and still find it quite a challenge to keep up with the demands of the mills and refineries. ” Deliver more oil, ship more goods, deliver more coal, deliver more ore, ship more goods, deliver more wood, ship more goods… ” etc. and so on. And, not to forget, keep all vehicles and trains up to date and make sure all inhabitants get to where they want to. As a beginner at this kind of transport game i find it very complex already and enjoy it a lot to get a better result in every new map i play.

For me, a better vehicle replacement system is all i’m looking out for at the moment, like say in the coming week or so.. 😉

” However, 1930 you can upgrade roads with bus lanes, trams and bus’s use it.   This pretty much solves any issue you should have with traffic. Though upgrading to that sucks the big one!!   Very easy to miss just a little chunk of road.”

Yes, them buslanes are great. Don’t have much of a problem with upgrading myself but it would be nice if long winding country roads could be upgraded by one click, like how cantenary upgrade works.

I just started a new map taking into account everything i’ve learned from you guys overhere. Looks like i’m finally getting the hang of it and know what to do and what not to do. Thanks again for all valuable information !  🙂

    Cheers,

    Mordeth,

“I like a N-S E-W main roads right thru the center.   I also have a large road that rings it.     Then I draw 6 roads out from that ring to all the cities on the map. “

What about the uncontrolable AI traffic ? Wouldn’t this create enormous traffic jams or, on the contrary, perhaps help to solve them ?  ( i noticed if you just click a piece of road to upgrade it, even if it’s already been upgraded, the traffic jam is gone instantly, but not for long… )

Just been rewarded for reaching 400 productivity, proud of that. 😉  Steel mill delivering to all 7 cities either by rail and road. The 3 oil refs i have running is another matter. I just had to close down one that was served and handed out goods via rail. Costing a constant 1.5M. Also closed down a rail line between 3 cities that cost 3.5M in the end while it was running great in the beginning.

After removing the rail line i setup bus lines to the same cities. Makes me sad to see people crowding up at the bus stations to get to these cities which they didn’t care about anymore when only trains would take them there… What is wrong with these people ???… What is wrong with trains ???…… Why in heavensname do they prefer jumping around on a bus hopping and bopping over a long winding country road while they can sit in a comfortable chair on a comfortable train, smoothly running at 180 km p/h, while enjoying hot or cold beverages, and possibly even cheaper too…  Search me, i don’t know.  Train Fever ??……  😉

And thanks for explaining about laying of roads in respect of city growth. Noted.  😉

When is a game complete ? Take Microsoft Flightsimulator. It’s been around for about 25 years. Has it been updated and upgraded ? Constantly ! Is it complete ? Absolutely not.

Doesn’t mean that heeps of peeps have had and still have great fun with it.

For me a game is complete when you can have fun with it and i have tremendous fun with TF. There is a lot to wish for and some of these wishes have already been adressed by the TF team even if it’s just over a month old. Put your worries about the various issues you mention aside and keep on playing. Once you grow into it you’ll notice how wonderful the game engine has been layed out. You’ll learn lots of things that you don’t know about just yet. It’s not only one road that leads to Rome….

F.i. roads that cannot be drawn over railtrack ? Simple solution: delete a piece of track, lay the road, put the piece of track back, Bob’s your uncle. And every road that ends up at a river bank can be extended to the otherside. Just make sure there’s room enough. Also you’ll find comfortable to have seperate tracks for passenger and cargo transport.

You’ll have to get into the game, the learning curve is not real easy, but once you see the beauty of it you’ll be asking yourself why you thought it is incomplete. Trust me.   😉

    Ok! Thanks guys !

” There is no doubt that early game you can run one factory out to all 7 cities on a small map.  Central location is preferred for this.   No trains needed, you can run horse’s and make it work.    Just have a good road network. “

Check, but the game is called “Train Fever” not “Horse & Wagon Fever” ..  😉

Yes, i run horse and wagons and it works fine indeed. Just seems a bit silly to me to have all these poor horses running about day and night while you can have a train do the job all at once. Laying roads is easier than laying track though, certainly over long distance.

“It is counter productive to have 2 oil wells feed one refinery.   However, there are no issues running 3 oil wells to 3 refineries.   Not sure where you heard it was a bad idea to run more then one of the same type of factory.  But let me assure you, it is false. “

Tossi explained, indeed i must’ve misunderstood what was said. All clear now. The thing is that i do have 3 refineries delivering goods to 3 cities. Seemed to work well (pun intended) but since i upgraded one with a 4 track freight station and seperate delivery of oil to the refinery and goods to the cities ( combined before) the refinery now produces not even half of what it did before the upgrade. ( i know it will take a while but still… )

“My current game I got real real lucky, I have an oil refinery up north, middle and south.   I ran the one in the middle until it reached 380 production.   Running to all 7 cities, then opened a new one for 2 north cities.   When the 1st one reached 350 goods used, I opened the one in the south.”

Wow!! I was already happy with 180 of the oil ref i upgraded. Now it’s only doing 61…. The other 2 do 80 and 59..  I know, i have to ship to more cities…

“All 3 factories are running great, my cities are having insane growth at the moment.  🙂 “

That’s another thing i haven’t really got the grip on yet… Next to getting transport organised for a city to grow, adding roads should help too, right ? I do see small buildings appear at some of the roads i’ve added but only just and that seems about it…. Nothing much more seems to happen…

I do have something good going on with my current map but it’s this upgraded oil refinery that’s costing me millions at the moment… I should’ve left it alone i guess…  😉

    Thanks for your explanation !

Ok! I loaded a saved game just before the one i was working on. 1996 and there was the E103 again. I never noticed 1997 as the lifespan…. In real life the’re still running so i didn’t think they’d be taken out of the game so early. Pity… i like them. Now i’m puttering on at 140 km on my highspeed track…  😉

    Thanks, guys !
