Sorry for being OT but it’s a bit funny how you can’t build “normal” paved roads rather than streets. I really admire the poor guys who have planted all the trees along those roads πŸ˜‰

You can’t even build double switches? To be honest I just thought I was doing something wrong when I tried… πŸ˜‰ I appreciate the developers work with this game a lot but I still feel like there’s missing a lot of quite “basic” features. Β I really enjoy the game in its current state too though. But I believe more is needed if they want the game to survive more than a couple of months.

My semester has already begun, so perhaps you’ll have more time on your hands πŸ˜‰ Β Well anything’ll work if you just don’t need to edit all files manually πŸ˜‰

I do believe that there is a cost mod in the mod section of the forums though. But I haven’t tried it so I don’t know how good it is really.

@trainjunkie Β I’m thinking of making a nice “cost-editor” with a simple GUI for easily chaning the different costs in-game. Though I don’t have that much free-time as usual due to studies and work. So I’m not sure when or if I’ll be able to make it really.

As far as I known there no way to change it through the now-existing lua files. I’ve as well tried doing it in a “less clean” way by modifying memory addresses in the .exe file though that hasn’t worked out neither. So I think it’ll be hard to make something like that with the current tools we’ve got available.

Well then I believe that the game might need some performance optimizations. Because I really don’t think you should be having any issues with that setup. Let’s just hope for some better optimization, because after all I think most player’ss goal is to create a really big and functional network. And then it’s a bit sad to be limited by performance. Though based on the simulation engine in the game I’m not very surprised if it becomes CPU heavy with a lot of lines running.

What hardware are you guys running? Would be nice to know until later when I’m going to expand my network πŸ˜‰

I’m playing with the Swedish names now and at least our Γ₯Àâ is working. I don’t know for sure about all letters though. πŸ™‚

    Looks good!
When you get tired of the Norwegian trains I think you should move over and make some of our Swedish trains πŸ˜‰ If you make a winter mod you’ll have to make sure they get constant breakdowns though because SJ’s trains never run in the winter πŸ˜‰

@benze Well my personal opinion is that when a game is released it should already has been going through a period of bug fixing and that all features should be well-tested. I don’t think that just because I’ve got no patience or something like that. And myself I’m not very picky about having to cope with a few bugs as long as it’s not enough to ruin my gameplay experience. No, I’ve played a lot of early access games and also games that have been released before they were really ready. And from that I’ve learned that it’s often very risky. Many games that could have turned out just great didn’t, because of the fact that the developers where not able to make the players happy before they completely lost interest in the game.

By the way I did write that based from what I had read and seen it looked like it was in early Beta. As I said I had not played the game, so I could not give an accurate view on that. That’s why I think you were overreacting a little bit when you asked me which planet I live on πŸ˜‰

When it comes to whether the game is polished enough for being released it also depends a lot on your personal thoughts and expectations. I also believe that the developers have done a really great job based on how few they are. Though this is a genre where you’ll find many hardcore sim players who want an extensive and complete game. And as this game is called “Train Fever” and announced as a game where you’re supposed to build a train network I believe there are many train-fans here that expect there to be really good functionality for the train system.

As habadacus mentioned the track laying system really isn’t optimal. It’s not easy to upgrade tracks and you can’t upgrade stations. The signals seem to be very limited in some cases. It’s hard to create complex network and getting the behaviour you want. I haven’t tried building very complex tracks yet but based on what I’ve seen and felt this far the signal system could really need some more work. I mean, constructing an overtake track shouldn’t be that hard (perhaps it isn’t, I might just be bad at it). If such things are missing I really understand why people might find the game lacking in features.

Personally I usually like to have as much advanced features in sim games as possible and I like being able to control as many aspects of the game as possible. Because else it’s just an other arcade game. And I believe that attention to detail like animations (you’ll need to find an other game to see them πŸ˜‰ ) and proper (working) grade crossings also contributes to the general gameplay experience.

Now to my own experience with the game. I have only played for a couple of hours yet, but this far I really like it. The visuals are quite nice (some animations would be nice though πŸ˜‰ ). Though the farmlands occur pretty flat and I would like some more forest areas. Haven’t really seen a landscape that looks like the one in-game somewhere in the world. But that’s not a very big deal at least. πŸ™‚

The actual gameplay seems pretty good so far, at least I’m enjoying it. I do have to struggle a bit to get along with the track laying system. And the slope tool doesn’t really seem to work very well at all times. Other then that I can’t say very much about it yet. I do think that I’ll continue to play the game for quite a while though, especially if we get some nice updates. πŸ™‚

Well I can’t comment on whether it’s possible or not. But I do believe that would be very nice and a quite important feature as trains do that all the time in real life.

Yes, as you say it all depends on the devs commitment. What made me a bit sceptic first was mainly that the game is not announced like an early access game. And at the current state I think it should be that (well I haven’t actually got to play the game yet so I guess I should not say too much about that πŸ˜‰ ). But due to the lack of the classical early access way of doing it like all other indie teams are doing it nowadays I believe they perhaps made the decision to deliver the game in this state for being able to get enough funds to keep working on it. And if that’s true it’s much possible that the game will actually turn out to be really great after a while. πŸ™‚

But now I’ll be heading in to the game. I’ll probably get pack here later to express my feelings about it πŸ˜‰

I couldn’t stand it any longer… I had to press the buy button πŸ˜‰

Now I’ll just put my money and my hope in the hands of the developers and hope that this will turn out to be a really great game. πŸ™‚ And yeah, there are many things that needs to be done and thanks for pointing that out everybody. But I’ll take a chance that it’ll at least give me enough fun to make it worth the money.

And I know you warned me habadacus πŸ˜‰ So I only have myself to blaim now.

Yes I agree with you RickD about the fact that it’s really nice being able to support the developers even if it’s a game that’s under development or not really ready yet. And I’ve done that many times. But if you get fooled a couple of times and the game developers leave you with an unfinished game in your hands you’ll be a bit more careful the next time πŸ˜‰

Okay, well I’ve been digging quite a lot in the forums today and I think I’m having a quite good picture of the game’s current state now. I do believe I would enjoy it, but at its current state and having in mind what kind of features I believe is important in this kind of games I think I would get rather annoyed after a while. Though I think that there are many thinks that could be improved a lot by updates. So I’ll kind of have to decide if I want to support the developers right now and hope they’ll continue to be committed and that they’ll listen to the community voices, or if I’ll wait and see what will happen.

I buy the way posted a short comment on their Facebook page about the fact that there are many people who wants the developers to be a bit more active in the forums. And surprisingly they replied to me and wrote that we can be asured that they are following the forums. That is of course very positive, but I guess we’ll have to wait for a couple of patches before it’s possible to determin where they are going with the game.

From what I’ve seen of the game It would really be nice to have some big, dense forest areas. I believe that they might have left that out due to performance issues. I don’t really know how good their graphics engine is. But it would of course add a lot to the visual experience of the game.
