Someone please explain signals

I can not for the life of me figure out how to make a 2 track train system with signals. What side of the track do I place them on and where? Can you show me some examples of a 2 track train system with more than 2 trains?

Signals always go at the right side of the direction where the train is going.

You could also just start a new map, take a huge loan and experiment with signals.
If you do that, you’ll directly see how AI will respond to different situations.
