    I had a short wagon line set up to deliver goods from a factory to a nearby town. It was doing quite nicely but wasn’t long enough to justify a railway. I wanted to deliver somewhere slightly further so I set up a nice rail line hoping that some of the goods would start to be delivered on it.

    Nothing changed, and the goods kept using my wagon line, so I removed it and they just started going by road to the same destination. So I removed the road and the industry just stopped producing altogether. It had a nice rail line to the next town along (which had demand) but just sat stubbornly not producing.

    I’m having a hard time understanding if I can somehow ‘start up’ an industry with production zero, or open up new delivery points for an industry that’s already producing. It doesn’t seem possible that the only available journeys are the ones where cargo is already flowing along the roads, but there’s no indication in the game of where other viable routes might be.

    Surely we don’t have to just create expensive rail lines with the risk that they won’t be used?

    i had the same problem, it does seem that nearby industries want to supply each other even if there isn’t a road anymore or even if the goods have to travel a huge time consuming detour.

    So I tested this in a new map, connecting up an ore mine and coal mine with zero production to a steelworks with zero production. In this case the coal mine was right across the map from the steelworks.

    It took a while, but the production at the coal and ore mine slowly ramped up and is now at a good level and using my lines to deliver to the steelworks. It’s been a total money sink though. The lines have run at a (large) loss for about four to five years and are only now looking like they might start to turn a profit.

    I had one unintended consequence. I hooked up a rail line to a town from the steelworks to deliver the goods, but it decided that a nearer town by road was more attractive so if I want to capture that trade I’ll have to either run more trains on the line or put in a road route to that town (it’s too close and uphill for rail).

    There’s a lot of depth here in working out how to hook things up for the maximum benefit, and with industry free to decide another option is more attractive there are few sure things.
