    If you have a steam engine and an electric engine in the same train, the train CAN go on an unelectrified line, however, the power calculated and thus the acceleration of the train is the sum total of the steam and electric engine. This makes for a very very fast train.

     

    The electric engine should not count in that case as it can’t generate pulling power until you hit an electrified line.
