I have always used radiating lines with this type of game. Out from the city centre with maybe a circular line around big city’s. It helps keep track of where they go, and as the city expands you just add stops to the end of the line, and add a few more buses to keep the frequency’s.

I like the Simutrans method where you can set variable loads and waiting times

the colour of the smoke will change with the state of the fire. as you add fuel the smoke will be darker and as the fuel burns the smoke will get lighter.
