This works automatically if you drop off the goods near the station (you don’t have to group them), but the route has to be viable, and the total travel time for goods should not exceed 20 minutes.

There probably is not a single cargo and pax transport model that would please all players. The current model is pretty much okay for passenger traffic, and works somewhat okay for cargo, but to allow more variation it would be nice if this model could be made moddable via Lua scripts.

That way modders can create a variety of transport models to suit all kinds of play styles. Cargo for example in general doesn’t mind if it takes ages to reach it destination; as long as it’s delivered in the end (think coal, ore, and lumber). If you combine that with a different (moddable!) distribution of industries (e.g., coal mines and forests in the mountains and away from rivers, and sawmills and factories near towns), and you get a whole different kind of game with longer trains hauling loads over longer distances. I’d love that.

Nicely presented suggestion and well thought out. It seems to me that having the platforms snap to the rails matches well with the existing track building interface. I’d love to use this feature. I wonder what the devs have planned for the stations?

This suggestion would also make it possible to create terminus stations that have their front entrance (and thus their road connection) at the end of the platforms.

I’m seeing the same behaviour omoikane, Yeol, and Mykel Razi observe. Buses and trams work like a charm; as long as you use one type of vehicle on a single line, they will spread out fairly evenly, even when part of the line runs through busy streets shared with other lines. Really nice!

Trains don’t seem to spread out reliably. I’ve had a line connecting three towns (two termini and one station in the middle) with various trains from the 1890s to the year 2000 — but always the same trains at any one period — usually with three trains on the line, but they would invariably bunch up.

The lack of platform selection sometimes caused them to wait for trains from other lines using the same platform, so that may have been an attributing factor as well, but by means of test I have removed all switches from this line except for those before the termini, forcing the whole line on dedicated tracks and platforms, and stopped one train to let the other two catch up to it, then started all three (all TFVs) and let the game run for ten years. They spread out a little, but they still followed each other much too closely.
