@leew: Yup, I do the same thing but I often use the wide city street so it modifies a bigger area at a time.

See this thread for both rail and road bridges over railway routes: http://www.train-fever.com/forums/topic/bridges-over-lines/  Many examples included.

If you want to temporarily turn them off for a screenshot, select the bulldozer tool. Just be careful of where you click! 🙂

Heh, I agree, it’s both cool and ridiculous!

The folks living nearby don’t seem to notice that there’s an incredibly huge bridge just outside their town. Life goes on…

    Usually the quickest route wins.

Maybe the industry can send stuff to their preferred destination via roads more quickly than by using your cargo terminal and route? Have you tried turning on the Cargo data display (bottom-right corner) to see where materials are flowing to?

It seems the game is designed to always take the shortest path, even if that means trampling on top of another route.

Until we get more sophisticated routing, I’ve ended up always making completely separate lines. They may use parallel tracks at the station, but there’s no crossover(s), they each have their own engine house, etc.

Heh-heh, you didn’t accidentally put a station stop on the moon, did you?

I’ve had some goods seemingly floating in mid-air, but nothing as dramatic as this.

I think you’re right Azrael, the AI cannot build roads over rail lines either. They will only take advantage of existing roads. When I lay out a station, I deliberately add some transverse roads before creating the rail lines so that development at least has a chance of reaching around to the other side of the tracks.

But in most cases I found that the development was pretty minor and of low economic value. To improve it I had to build roads closer to the station ends, ones that are closer to the heart of the city. From reading the developers’ log, I think the main factor influencing the amount of development is travel time. So closer roads, or quicker in-city transit, will help.

Looks good Person012345, especially that last shot.

Thanks bencze, I was trying to create the feeling of a busy rail hub in the center of a city.

I find that having bridges or roads close to the ends of the station helps carry the economic wealth of the town across to the other side of the rails, thereby allowing that side to become more built up and therefore the station appears more central in the layout of the town.

Back when I had roads crossing the rails further down the line from the station, the other side of town never seemed to develop properly. Effectively the railway was cutting it off.

(BTW, why is there no quote function in this forum?)

But if you have the millions to spare, you can have some fun! I’ve been experimenting with semi-sunken stations to I can put road bridges over the line without them being so strongly arched. My latest example:

Somehow one bridge ended up with no middle support pillar. Most times I’ve tried it, you have to be very careful to arrange the bridge so the middle pillar ends up between the two sets of tracks, like the other end of this town:

The basic depression for the tracks was made using several long roads and the “N” key to push them down, then deleting the roads. I tend to use roads for a lot of terrain sculpting. 😉  You can see the work I put into making the slopes as nice as I could, but of course after a few years the game has plopped in some buildings with abrupt, sharp foundation terrain. Oh well.

Be sure to have a good supply of cash if you want to build this sort of thing. Including demolishing a fair chunk of the original town, I seem to recall it added up to about $25 million to build this setting.

    Good fun though. 😉
