I have several “railroad” and “transportation” games.  But the one I keep going back to is OpenTTD.  The graphics are beyond horrid, laying track is a PITA, you can’t rotate the map, trucks are useless (if they’re making money, I replace taken-over trucks with a train ASAP), minimal animation.  However, gameplay is has.

Give me a modern looking/acting Railroads!/OpenTTD and you’d have a winner.  (Well, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.)

Many years ago, there was an oil company ad and their tag line was “If you don’t have an oil well, get one!”  Still remember it.
The ability of building your own industries to complete your own transportation chains, instead of making do with what you’re given, would be a huge bonus. (“If I just had a factory about here…”)

    (Gee, I don’t want much, do I?)

I too have TANE, but (Open)TTD and TANE are two different animals.
One is a game, the other a simulation.

It took them several years to write TANE.  I don’t want to wait that long.   I too marvel at the detail, but (and excuse me for saying so) it’s for the excessively detailed train freaks (they’ll come unglued if a train whistle doesn’t sound right, or the color scheme wasn’t available at that time, for that engine).

If they’re gonna do a new game (hopefully about trains) I hope they do an updated TTD, with much better graphics (one look at OpenTTD and you’ll see that should be easy), more industries/goods, etc.

I’ve tried Locomotion, CIM2, Freight Tycoon Inc., Industry Empire, Industry Giant 2, Industry Transporters, OpenTTD, and Transport Giant.  I’m looking for something like Sid Meier’s Railroads!, but without the cartoony graphics, much larger maps, and based on mostly on industrial transportation (with some people moving thrown in).

Course, what I’m envisioning for the “perfect” game for me is different than the one for you.  They’ll never be the “perfect” game for everyone.

    Agreed.
It’s hard to compare a city-builder and one that focuses on transport.  Two different focuses.

I’ve got Skylines on pre-order too, but you never know.  What game doesn’t feel rushed?

However, at least the new DLC changed the looks of the game, which helps a lot.

My first impression: for a free DLC this is impressive!  Nitpick it all you want, but something like this for FREE?  I’ll take it any day.  Good Job and Thanks, guys!

Isn’t it funny how the OP never responds?
I guess they just rant and leave.

Some one needs to read the Overview (http://www.train-fever.com/game-info/overview/ ) and quit thinking this is a true ‘sim’ like Trainz.

    Not signed.

    It’s a game.  Play it.
Is it perfect?  Not by a long shot.  Improvements?  Sure.  But what game doesn’t need improvements?

No one said it’s a ‘sandbox’ game- read the overview on the main page.  It’s a ‘simulation’.  You can’t do whatever you want.  If there’s 3 buildings in the way of where you want to build a track  then it’s your job to decide on an alternative route… or decide to destroy the buildings yourself.   If you messed up and all the track sections don’t connect, then it’s your job to fix it.  It’s not the game’s job to provide you with options- it’s your job to come up with options that work.

You may think the game is “hard to use for mortal-humans”, and I agree it is challenging, but not near as hard as some railroad/transportation simulations are!

My tips (such as they are).

    * When you start a new game, don’t do anything for 1 year but put it on high speed.  (Or do that now).   Now pause it.  Turn on the Cargo overlay.  You’ll be surprised how many industries are doing nothing but there’s some materials and goods moving from some raw materials, to processing plants, and on to towns.  That’s where you want to set up your transportation.  Be sure to use a cargo station and put it near the industrial part of town.
    * Trains aren’t always the answer.  My trains running a forest>sawmill>town was losing money fast.  Switched to horse-drawn wagons and was making some nice profit.  (This was early in the game though).
    * Once you have a goods route running and making money, then you can think about setting up a ‘bus’ route (well, stagecoach) in town to connect all the parts.  You might have to add some additional road at the end of roads to connect them together and make your routing easier.  Plan ahead- you’ll need to add a passenger station near your residential or tourist section.
    * Making money now?  If you have more than 3 million, pay your loan down.  That’s costing you $30K a year.
    * Pick a good size nearby town.  Add a ‘bus’ service to it.  Once it’s up and running profitability, add passenger station near the residential or tourist sections of both towns.  Now you can add a passenger train between the two, with the ‘busses’ feeding passengers to the stations.
    * Just remember 3 things: 1) the shorter the route, the less cars you need, the shorter the time it takes to complete the route, the less the expenses.  2) Start small and insure it’s profitable before you move on.  3) Never be afraid to ditch something that isn’t profitable and try something else.

Rats.  Spoke too soon.  Still got the same old problem, even on “low” settings.

Steam applet?  Went to Steam, searched, and couldn’t find it.

    🙁
Same problem I reported in http://www.train-fever.com/forums/topic/game-hangs-after-2-minutes-intel-4200/
I just thought it was fixed, but it’s happening again.  I even set the game to “windowed” and “low” graphics settings.

It’s so frustrating- when I first got the game it worked fine for me, I could play for an hour straight, no problem.  But the last two updates “broke” it.  Maybe it’s an OpenGL (timing out) problem, maybe not.  I don’t know.  I do know I have the latest drivers (for HD4400) from Windows.
Still waiting patiently for a fix.

I wasn’t the only one having the “graphics” problem.  I noted my problem in here:
    http://www.train-fever.com/forums/topic/game-hangs-after-2-minutes-intel-4200/

But with this patch: “Removed dependency on OpenGL extension GL_ARB_timer_query ” and (apparently) that was (and solved) my problem.

    Waypoints, smaypoints.
What I love is that I can finally play the game again without the ‘graphics’ bombing on me after a couple of minutes!!!!  (Apparently is was a OpenGL problem).
    Woo Hoo!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    All I know is:
Pre-patch: game worked fine.  (And no problems with other games, either).
Post-patch: my internal Intel HD4400 graphics quits responding after a few minutes and fails to recover.  (See Problems- other people are reporting the same thing).

I just hope the next patch un-fixes the graphics problems to I can play the game again.

    Steam name: GeneMead
    intel HD4400.
    i5.
    8 gigs ram
Build 4587 for Win 64, 10/31/14(?), “stability patch”(?)  (Is this the ‘latest’ one?)

Same problem as the others (graphics card doesn’t respond and says it is, but can’t recover), but before the last patch TF ran fine!… so it’s not my card, and all my other games and apps run without problems too.

In other words, the last patch ‘broke’ the game for me and now I can’t play it.

    (In)patiently waiting for a fix…..
