It’s not possible to tell without seeing your line, but it never happened to me with trains. As long as direction is clearly marked with one way signals, at least…

edit: perhaps put such topics in general forum area, at least there’s nothing in your post that would indicate a bug.

It makes a lot of sense to do some changes like this, but your numbers sort of look way way off. Every line making profit, not even openttd does that. πŸ™‚

I am playing a medium map now, medium difficulty, around 2000 I have 400+ mill. True, I avoided trains almost totally so train costs are somewhat off as it is.

At some point I had issues with the above improved setup as well, because trucks waiting in queue blocked the road as well (when using low capacity vehicles especially, I use several for a line sometimes to get decent frequency, otherwise stuff goes on foot).

Nowdays I don’t set full load, it seems unnatural to me to be honest but I am not sure i that constant bouncing increases running cost (probably doesn’t) so in fact it shouldn’t matter whether you use full load or not (perhaps it’s not so easy to establish number of vehicles needed at a glance that’s all).

Well to be fair I am not sure in RL trains go through stations at 300 km/h. I’m pretty sure they slow down somewhat, don’t they? For safety or whatever else reasons…

Wow, thank you! Off to download it.

I’m tired of my current game in Win anyway, put in a railroad that does a huge curve off the map and it’s lagging my game unplayable slide show… :p

I checked the first comments to the 4th Win release and website showed 17h. It’s either showing CEST or maybe shows browser local time or something (which is same for me).

I just finished work and awaiting impatiently for it πŸ™ I use win for 2 reasons currently, TF and banking. The latter is ok, I only need it a couple times a month. πŸ™‚

    Please gimme linux version!

The longest train I ever used so far is 4 cars length (3 trains on the line). It feeds raw mats into a factory that supplies 3 or 4 towns. It fits into the small station well enough. Because of the demand simulation as it is I am not sure I feel the need for very long trains – if the distance is long you need more trains for frequency anyway so it’s not like you build 1 very long one that goes around once per year.

I’m in the 70s atm on a medium map. 14 towns as I remember, 12 connected with inner lines, some lines between them, 12 towns receiving goods. I have 50 something lines, that’s probably 200-220 vehicles. Game gets sluggish often for a few seconds but generally it works. I notice slideshow kind of lag if I try to build a long rail or road section in one go.

I think what may kill performance is the movement of the people, walking and driving around, when I zoom in there’s LOTS of them. That’s a lot of objects to do calculations for! Decisions at intersections (pedestrian crossings), chosing destinations etc. My guess would be, that optimizing this (simpler logic, dunno?) could help tremendously. We’ll see in a few weeks time if they succeed.

My pc is an i5-2400 with 8gb ram, Ati 6770 vga.

Generally I place a signal wherever I might need the train to wait. I think this is most important. Then I also placed some more to simply divide the track in pieces, although I am not sure how much track the trains reserve, only up to the next signal, or more. The idea was so trains can follow each other at some distance, but then I have 1 train line currently and it only has 3 trains so I canΓ‘t say I really tested it out. Maybe by the year 2000 my 4 main cities will grow enough so I can use train to connect them in a circle at the edge of the map with an express or something. πŸ™‚

That’s nice. I will review my lines when I get home, in 2-3 hours. :p

Do you have constant 4 + signs for your cities? I usually have those right after I expand lines etc. and then it stops again. Lately only way I could get 500 people cities to grow, was to make tram lines to/from smaller neighbour cities.

Btw for lines connecting cities, I assume if I have proper local transportation, it is enough to have the stations at city edge, it’s not necessary to carry people to the center, right?

For the ‘line in use – no’ thing, it was said before, said vehicles to depot then assign them to the line again and in a few seconds it should turn to Yes.

For the above scenario what I would do:

    1) coal-ore-steel mill line

    2) steel mill – city line

a couple / few carriages each, enough to be faster than walking (ore will stop walking will go to station instead)

Also I don’t set wait for full, sometimes it’s too slow to fill a car and frequency goes up way too much. Just always make sure you use just as many vehicles you need to have good enough frequency (so line works) and cargo doesn’t pile up in station a lot.

This is really interesting, I was not sure people will change lines as needed. So far I tried to cover full city with 1 line (those are profitable) or having multiple lines from parts of green areas to everywhere (those weren’t).

I guess I’ll have some work to do redoing my 4 major cities lines. πŸ™‚

I have been looking for some ways to increase population as fast as possible but only had moderate success, cities grow very slow, I guess I have to work more on the local and remote lines…

It is indeed difficult to build tracks, in my current game I spent all money and the 10m loan to build one rather short line because it was difficult terrain and I wasted a lot of time and money by trying things I had to delete. Few decades later I replaced it with trucks as it was just a goods line supplying a city and there was no way to make it profitable at all. Slopes, collisions, terrain collisions are a nightmare.

I don’t know how beta was but I’m sure it was much worse, currently I find it very playable. There’s hundreds of posts, everyone wants someting while the devs probably only want to get a good nights sleep. πŸ™‚ there’s not even one week since release and then linux and mac version come out tomorrow if all goes well. Maybe I’m just a realist but I suppose it will be a few weeks to sort out the more annoying bugs and then hopefully they will implement some improvements as well and however much we’d want it to happen overnight it will be some time to do it.

I have been waiting since the project was started on gambitious maybe 1.5 year or so ago. Perhaps another 1.5 years of development would have made it better by release but unfinished, I wouldn’t call it that…

Technically Openttd is much more mature (ok, that’s years and years of development), but it has 0 detail, and by detail level in TF I’m not talking of gfx but for example the people driven economy system (reminds me a bit of railroad tycoon 3), realism of cities (sims living their lives and this drives demand for transportation), pedestrians and traffic jams in cities etc. which I find quite cool. (remember I have been playing openttd for months so maybe I’m starved for these things πŸ™‚ )

I actually have another problem that solved the trucks getting stuck problem. If I set vehicles to wait for load frequency increases too much and cargo starts to go by themselves. So in my current game I didn’t set anything to full load… (I don’t like this logic but hey, it works for now).
